Trees on the SUA campus will be marked with arborist labels

In recent days, trees in the Botanical Garden Park of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (SUA) have been tagged with Arbotag labels, which include an ID number and precise GPS location.
This is part of the long-anticipated Tree Care Management Plan, which will involve identifying and professionally assessing trees across the entire university campus.
“The goal is to create a strategic document — an arborist assessment of the trees. It will include an overview of each tree’s health, key details, and recommendations for maintenance, care, or possible removal,” said Alica Saková, Director of the Botanical Garden.
The work will be carried out in two phases. The first involves tagging all trees. The next step is to collect dendrological data and assess each tree’s vitality, health condition, and long-term outlook. The final result will also include tailored recommendations for ongoing care over the next several years.
A user-friendly GIS portal will be developed to allow sorting and viewing of detailed tree information, care suggestions, and priority actions at any given time. This document will serve as a vital tool for managing SUA’s green spaces.
“With this data, we’ll have a clear overview of the health and structural condition of all trees, allowing us to plan interventions more efficiently — ensuring the trees’ longevity and the safety of our visitors,” added Saková.
The project is led by experts from the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering at SUA — Marcel Raček, Marek Hus, and Miroslav Čibik — in coordination with the Botanical Garden. Students from the Institute of Landscape and Garden Architecture will also participate during field training, helping connect education with real-world practice.
