A green wall with a rainwater harvesting system will be installed in front of the Institute of Horticulture at the Slovak University of Agriculture (SUA) in Nitra.
The Institute of Horticulture at the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering, SUA in Nitra, has been successful in the Slovenská sporiteľňa Foundation’s grant call For the Future 2025. The UniGreenWall – University Green Wall project was ranked among the 20 supported projects out of a total of 185 applications. Of these, 178 met the eligibility criteria, and the expert evaluation committee selected only the top twenty to receive support of €15,000, financed through contributions obtained via the allocation of 2% of income tax.
The UniGreenWall project represents an environmental initiative aimed at revitalising and enhancing the appearance of a metal hall located in the SUA educational zone. Beyond its aesthetic value, the project aims to improve the microclimate on campus, reduce heat accumulation, dampen noise, and promote biodiversity.
The proposed design includes a rainwater harvesting system that will channel water into a storage trough filled with basalt wool and gravel. This system will provide natural irrigation for 40 metres of modular planters, where approximately 200 perennials and climbing plants will be planted. The result will be a continuous green barrier that will help cool the area during the summer months and contribute to improving the quality of the environment.
The project will also include educational and awareness-raising activities focused on water management and mitigating the effects of climate change. Implementation is scheduled to begin at the start of the new academic year, with completion of the green wall expected by the end of November.
