EU CITIZEN
REGISTRATION OF RESIDENCE FOR EU/EEA/SWISS CITIZENS
- registration is handled in person at the competent Foreign Police Department
- an appointment must be reserved in advance through the online system
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR REGISTRATION OF RESIDENCE FOR EU/EEA/SWISS CITIZENS:
- completed application form "Application for registration of Union citizen's right" – must be in Slovak and signed, found under the name "Application for renewal of temporary residence"
- valid passport or ID card
- document proving the purpose of stay – confirmation of admission for studies
- if unable to prove studies, a document demonstrating financial security is required, such as a bank account statement (the minimum living standard in Slovakia is €273.99 per month for each month of stay)
- proof of health insurance in Slovakia – a European Health Insurance Card or confirmation of insurance covering medical expenses in Slovakia is sufficient
A certificate of residence registration is issued to the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen on the day of submitting the complete application.
While the law does not mandate EU citizens to apply for a residence card, it can simplify formalities with banks or insurance companies. If interested in obtaining a residence card, known as "Residence card of an EU citizen," the following must be provided:
- two current facial photographs – 3 x 3.5 cm
- proof of accommodation – an officially verified document in Slovak:
- declaration of property ownership (if the EU citizen is the owner)
- confirmation from an accommodation facility (hotel, hostel) on provided accommodation
- lease agreement with the property owner
- declaration of accommodation provision by the property owner (individual or legal entity)
- a fee of €10 (for issuance within 30 days) or €39 (for expedited issuance within 2 working days) in form of a duty stamp.
- duty stamps can be purchased at the Foreign Police self-service machine or post office
THIRD COUNTRY NATIONAL
TEMPORARY RESIDENCE – APPLICATION PROCESS
Application Submission
- the application for temporary residence for study purposes is submitted in person at the competent Foreign Police Department, with a prior appointment made online
- documents must be complete – incomplete applications will not be accepted. It's advisable to prepare all necessary documents during the national visa application or before arrival in Slovakia
- the application must be submitted during the validity of national visas, within the 90-day visa-free regime for eligible countries, or during the validity of residence granted in another EU member state
Stay in Slovakia During Processing
- after submitting a complete application, the foreign national is entitled to stay in Slovakia until the Foreign Police decides on granting temporary residence
Decision and Issuance of Residence Card
- the Foreign Police decision will be made within 30 days of receiving the complete application
- the residence card ("card") issuance, after the residence is granted, can typically take up to 30 days (fee of €10 in duty stamps), or expedited within 2 days (fee of €39 in duty stamps) after the decision
Card Delivery
- the card will be delivered by Slovak Post courier after receiving an SMS notification from the Foreign Police
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
- the application form must be fully completed in Slovak and signed by the applicant. The form is available under the name "Application for temporary residence"
- two current facial photographs – 3 x 3.5 cm
- valid passport
- national visa type D
- documents proving the purpose of stay – e.g., confirmation of full-time study admission (document must be in Slovak)
- document proving financial security – e.g., scholarship award confirmation (document must be in Slovak)
- criminal record extract – from the home country and any country where the foreign national resided for over 90 days within 6 consecutive months in the last three years. The extract must be legalized/apostilled and officially translated into Slovak
- for university studies, accommodation proof is not required
- all documents must be no older than 90 days at the time of application
- documents issued abroad must be legalized/apostilled and translated into Slovak by an official translator
OBLIGATIONS AFTER TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT ISSUANCE AND CARD COLLECTION:
Medical Certificate
- within 30 days of collecting the card, a medical certificate (no older than 30 days) confirming the absence of infectious (tropical) diseases must be submitted to the Foreign Police. This certificate is issued by specialized clinics for a fee
Health Insurance
- health insurance must be arranged within 3 days of card collection. The insurance document is not required to be sent to the Foreign Police but must be ready for inspection if needed
